Dothan, Alabama

Dothan is a mid-sized city located in Houston County, Alabama in what is known as the Wiregrass Region. Dothan’s claim to fame is being recognized as the Peanut Capital of the World. Originally a cotton producing area, after the boll weevil devastation in the early 1900s the region turned to producing peanuts which was a very successful crop that brought financial prosperity to the city. To celebrate its close association with the peanut, Dothan hosts an annual Peanut Festival.

The gathering will be held at the Dothan Botanical Gardens on Friday. The Dothan Area Botanical Gardens consists of 50 acres of cultivated gardens, nature trails and undeveloped, wooded landscape. The Garden also includes the “Wings of Wonder” Butterfly House. The butterfly enclosure features approximately 500 native butterflies. “Scarecrows in the Gardens” will be displayed for the entire month of October. The Gardens are located at 5130 Headland Avenue, Dothan, AL 36303. Our meeting will take place in Ricketts Hall.
