Tour Of “Fairsted” The Olmsted National Historic Site and Lecture: “Frederick Law Olmsted, Pioneer Of Beauty” By Alan S. Banks

Thursday, November 9, 2017
10:00 am CST12:00 pm CST
99 Warren Street Brookline, MA

We will gather between 10:00 AM and 10:20 AM, in time to divide into groups for tours of the fascinating Olmsted Historic Site. After our tour, we will meet in the education center for a slide lecture about Frederick Law Olmsted and his legacy. The Park Service has kindly agreed that we may remain in this room, after the lecture, to hold a short business meeting. Lunch will be on our own. A note: There is no charge for this program. However, in order for the Park Service to have the staff they require, we must give them a count two weeks before the date. Please reply to Jane O’Sullivan by October 26. The firm Frederick Law Olmsted founded over a century ago was involved in over 6000 landscape architecture projects through- out North America. Beginning with the seminal work of New York’s Central Park, Olmsted created landscapes that nourished both body and mind and helped to nurture the nation’s democratic spirit. The 45-minute slide lecture will sample this rich landscape legacy and explore the ideas behind his designs.
Special note: Parking is extremely limited and is accessed at the back of the building, around the corner from Warren Street on Dudley Street. Otherwise, parking is on-street on the south side of Dudley Street. Please carpool as much as possible! Their excellent website has a location map and much more information. https://www.nps.gov/frla/index.htm/index.htm
