A Celebration of All Things Herbal Presented by the Pennsylvania Heartland Unit

Join us for a Celebration of Herbs. For 35 years, the members of the Pennsylvania Heartland Unit have
held a symposium to educate and excite the public about the uses of
herbs. This year, we are going to have a 35th Anniversary Party at Stokesay Castle with an herbal luncheon.
Our speakers for the day, Holly and Osamu Shimizu,will speak on a variety of herbal topics.
There will be ample opportunity for herbal learning and tasting throughout the day.
After registering, we welcome you to sample the herbal cookiesthat will be provided by our members.
Take time to browse through the many interesting items available from our vendors.
This is a great opportunity to do some early holiday shopping.
Visit the education table to learnmore about Asian herbs. Also, visit our demonstration tables to see,
touch and taste a variety of wonderful herbs and herbal products. The celebration centerpieces containing
a variety of herbal items willbe given as door prizes.
All registrants will receive an herbal sniffer as a favor.
Be sure to check out the beautiful baskets and interesting items on display at the raffle tables; raffle
proceeds benefit the PHHS scholarship program.
Enjoy a delicious luncheon served in the unique atmosphere of Stokesay Castle. Have a delightful day
with us as we explore all areas related to herbs and learn about the new Asian herbs for cooking and
health.
Featured Speakers: Holly and Osamu Shimizu
Holly H. Shimizu is a nationally recognized horticulturist, consultant, and educator.
With a rich background in all aspects of public gardens, extensive experience leading garden tours and workshops,
and a proven commitment to plant conservation and sustainability, she has been making plants and
gardens more accessible and exciting to both professionals and amateurs for over four decades.
Holly, was theExecutive Director of the US Botanic Garden 2000-2014, renovated the Conservatory, completed the
National Garden, and created new plant collections and innovative exhibits.
Osamu Shimizu was born in Okayama, Japan, where he became interested in plants as a young boy when
he taught himself the art of bonsai. He studied at the Koyo School of Landscape Design. He has worked
for firms designing parks and gardens in Japan. He went to Europe where he worked in the Kew and Royal
Botanic gardens in England. After he and Holly were married, they moved to the DC area where Osamu
started his landscape business.
His gardens have been featured on TV and in many national magazines.
