The Western Reserve Unit of The Herb Society of America
The purposes of the Western Reserve Herb Society (WRHS) are to further the knowledge and use of herbs and to contribute the results of the experiences and research of its members to the records of horticulture and science and to disseminate this information through various channels.
The WRHS was founded on May 22, 1942, by a group of educationally-minded, vivacious women who delighted in the horticultural, medicinal and culinary aspects of herbs. Community volunteers, they dedicated their efforts to educating the WRHS’s membership and the northeastern Ohio community about the uses of herbs.
Over the years, members have raised funds through the sale of herbal products at an annual Herb Fair. These funds help to support the nationally recognized Herb Garden owned by WRHS and located on the grounds of the Cleveland Botanical Garden in University Circle. One of the nation’s largest herb gardens, each of the nine sections enchant the many visitors that come throughout the year. The knot garden, antique grinding stones and armillary entice photographers. The Herb Garden provides a research lab for WRHS members and students of horticulture. WRHS also offers college scholarships each year for young people interested in horticulture and the environment.
Lectures, symposia, crafting herbal products, growing herbs, gardening and culinary adventures await those interested in joining WRHS. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the growing and/or use of herbs, and who is committed to sharing that interest with the community. Meetings are held on Wednesdays and work in the Herb Garden is scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday from April through October. A monthly newsletter, Herb Scents, reports on the educational, horticultural, culinary, gardening, craft and scholarly activities and endeavors of the membership.
