The New York Unit of The Herb Society of America

The New York Unit of the Herb Society of America was founded in 1938 with the object of stimulating interest in the knowledge and use of herbs, and to develop and maintain educational and cultural projects relating to herbs. We have a rich and inspiring history: our wonderful location has facilitated connections with many outstanding horticultural institutions, and brought a wealth of accomplished members to our ranks. We help support public gardens and programs in and around New York City that share the mission of growing herbs "for use and for delight."

Our Unit meets regularly and publishes a quarterly newsletter.  We hold an annual Herb Fair, present a program to the public once a year in the spring, and maintain a spectacular herb garden on the grounds of the historic John Jay Homestead in Katonah, New York. Membership meetings include speaker, reports on interesting books and favorite plants, and the sharing of herbal-inspired food and drink.

Our annual Herb Fair is traditionally held on the third Thursday in September, from 11 to 2, at the John Jay Homestead in Katonah NY. We have plants, herbal products and crafts, vinegars, baked goods, books, a raffle, herbal demonstrations and a very special tarragon mustard that every year brings people back for more.  Admission is free and lunch, featuring our signature Lovage Soup, is available to purchase.

More specific information about the current year’s spring meeting and fall Herb Fair appears in HSA’s Calendar of Events.
