The Nashville Unit of The Herb Society of America

The Herb Society of Nashville is a non-profit, working organization dedicated to promoting the knowledge, use, and delight of herbs through educational programs, research, and sharing the experiences of its members with the community. In 1973, members of a study group, which had been together from the mid-1960s, decided to seek others with similar interests, and The Herb Society of Nashville was organized. It became a unit of The Herb Society of America in June of 1981.

In its enthusiasm and commitment to public service, HSN provides a Speakers Bureau, maintains two public gardens, and presents symposiums open to the public. At the plant sale in April, members work to provide information to the public on the culture, harvesting, and use of the herbal plants that are sold.

The Herb Garden at Centennial Park Arts Center, originally planted in 1977 and redesigned and planted in 1998, is a quiet refuge in the middle of a busy urban public park. This traditional display garden is designed to introduce the community to the pleasure of herbs.

The Herb Study Garden at Cheekwood, first planted in 1983, has been redesigned. It was completed and rededicated in June 2001. The design focuses on segments of the magnificent Ionic columns from the Tennessee State Capitol, a newly designed arbor, and the addition of a water feature. Specialty theme beds provide information on historical and contemporary uses of herbs. An Endowment Fund campaign was successfully completed in the year 2001 to provide for the continued long-term maintenance of the Herb Study Garden at Cheekwood.
