What a Difference a Species Makes

The Herb Society of America recognizes that living herb plants are the very reason for our existence. HSA encourages the cultivation and preservation of living germplasm. As a living plant collection, the Salvia Collection at the New Orleans Botanical Garden supports education and conservation. The New Orleans Unit established the collection in 1997. The collection was severely damaged in Tropical Storm Isidore in 2002 and then devastated in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. With the help of donations from other HSA members, units and friends, the collection was rebuilt and now offers a partial view, 30 species, of the diverse Salvia genus growing in the Southern Gulf Coast Climate, Zones 9a and 9b.

People from around the world visit the New Orleans Botanical Garden and often stop by to chat when HSA New Orleans Unit members are tending to the beds.
