Promising Plants ProfilesEchinacea 'Matthew Saul' (Harvest Moon™)
Genus: Echinacea Flower Color: golden-yellow Uses: ornamental, craft (arrangements), butterfly gardens, aromatic "This plant is a result of crosses between E. purpurea and E. paradoxa. It was hybridized by Richard Saul of ItSaul Plants in Atlanta, Georgia. It is trademarked as part of the Big Sky™ series. The other cultivars are 'Sunrise,' 'Sunset' and 'Twilight.' Harvest Moon™ is one of the most fragrant echinaceas on the market, sweet smelling, almost rose-scented. Plants are single coneflowers with earthy golden-yellow ray flowers. The central cone is a golden orange-yellow. The wide reflexed ray flowers overlap, and the flowers look full. The plant is heavily branched, producing copious flowers. It is a vigorous grower with a long season of bloom. The leaves are dark green, coarsely toothed, and provide a coarse textural accent. It is hardy in Zones 4-9. The plant is 24-30 inches tall with an equal spread. Deadheading extends flowering time. Grow this perennial in full sun in average, well-drained garden loam. The plant has a deep tap root and survives considerable drought. This coneflower has good flowers for cutting. Use the cones for dried arrangements or leave in the garden as a food for birds and butterflies. The plant is deer proof." – Stephanie Cohen, Promising Plants Presentation, 2006 * Plant patent applied for by ItSaul Plants. This plant often appears in nursery catalogs as Echinacea 'Harvest Moon.'
