Dr. Duke’s Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical Databases

Includes five separate databases: Ecosys--plant ecological ranges, EthnobotDB--worldwide plant uses, FoodplantDB--Native American food plants, MPNADB--medicinal plants of Native America, and PhytochemDB--plant chemicals. 

Guide to Medicinal and Aromatic Plants

A collection of several databases from Purdue University Center for New Crops and Plant Products. Plant/Crop Descriptors includes monographs covering a variety of plant information including description, uses, and research. Type of information varies by plant. Indexed by Latin and common name. Other databases include Botanical Companies Database and Flavor, Fragrance and Essential Oils Companies Database. Also includes a Guide to Herb Varieties and a directory of sources for herb seeds and plants.

Herbmed

Subscription database from the Alternative Medicine Foundation with information on over 100 medicinal plants. Coverage includes evidence of activity (from case studies/clinical trials), warnings, preparations, mixtures, mechanisms for action and related links (including images). 40 plant profiles are available without a subscription.

Hortiplex

Brings together data from a variety of good plant databases on over 50,000 taxa and 50,000 cultivars. Searchable by common or botanical name. Includes images.

Native American Ethnobotany Database
http://herb.umd.umich.edu/
Coverage includes foods, drugs, dyes, fibers and other uses of 4,029 species of plants by 291 Native American groups. Each entry includes Latin and common name, Native American group, uses and source of information. Searchable by keyword. Boolean search available.

OSU PlantFacts
http://plantfacts.osu.edu/
Searchable database of over 20,000 pages of extension service factsheets from forty-six universities and government agencies. Search can be limited by region.

Plants Database - USDA
http://plants.usda.gov/
Includes searchable database of plant images, distribution information and plant classification information including hierarchical listing. Plant checklists are searchable by state. Plant characteristics section includes information on physiology, growth requirements, reproduction and suitability/use.

Plants for a Future Database
http://www.pfaf.org
Includes entries for over 7,000 useful plants. Coverage includes physical characteristics, habitats, edible, medicinal and other uses, cultivation and propagation information, scent, select cultivars, print references and web reference links. Searchable by Latin and common name, use, area or habitat.

Traditional Medicines Database - Tramed

Developed by the South African Traditional Medicines Research Unit, Dept. of Pharmacology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town. Pull down menus support searches by plant (includes vernacular names), treatment, toxicology, and pharmacological reaction.
