2007 Educational Conference Highlights

The Herb Society of America Educational Conference and Annual Meeting of Members was held May 3-5, 2007 at the Chaparral Suites Hotel in Scottsdale, AZ.

Featured speakers included Dr. James Duke, well-known economic botanist, ethnobotanist and herbalist, and author of 25 books. He spoke about “Green Prescriptions: Natural Strategies and Herbal Recipes for a Healthful Lifestyle.” Other speakers were Phyllis Hogan, “Traditional People, Medicinal Plants: The Legacy of Winter Sun; David Morris, “Gourd Art and the Ancient Ones”; Rexford Talbert, “Rare of Endangered Herbal Genera of the Southeastern & Western United States”; Kevin Dahl, “Ancient Seeds for Modern Needs: Southwestern Native Crops & Wild Foods in Your Garden” and many more.

Many herbal products were available for purchase in the Marketplace. Pre-conference tours took participants to the Curandero Trail, which features plants with traditional Native American and Hispanic healing uses, the Desert Botanical Garden, the Landscape Interpretive Trail Demonstration Gardens and the Boyce Thompson Arboretum.

The post-conference tour also featured Baker’s Nursery, with its fantastic collection of locally adapted seeds, flowers, trees, fruiting plants, herbs and roses, and the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeology Park.

The conference concluded with HSA’s Annual Awards Ceremony.
